I have a sas7bdat file and a sas7bndx file with the same name in the same folder but the SAS proc doesn't recognize it. How can I restore the index using these datasets. I did not create the index and I am not sure how it was created.

What do you mean by "the SAS proc doesn't recognize it"? Have you tried using PROC CONTENTS on the dataset and does it report an index or not?

Check the modified dates for both the files. If the date modified on the SAS7BDAT file is not the same as the SAS7BNDX file then the index won't match the dataset. It will need to be recreated.
