Problem in SAS Arrays

Dear,

I am getting some problems in SAS arrays. I have to perform some arithmetic operaitons on SAS like "=" ">=" "<=". I am able to do it. But I am getting the problem while performing the "not equal to operation". I have tried all the operators like "~=" "^=" and "NE". But it gives me an error stating "
ERROR: Illegal reference to the array ."

Can you please help me out in solving this issue.

This is probably a question that is better suited to the DATA Step forum, than the ODS and Base SAS reporting forum (which deals with PROC PRINT, PROC REPORT, PROC TABULATE and ODS).
