I would say this is a SAS Tech support question as they can look at your version and OS to replicate the issue which would be much harder for anyone else to do.

And I agree, turning off sounds overall is not an option but I'd definitely also check the settings and preferences to see if something new was added.

I'm using SAS 9.4. For some reason, SAS plays a Windows sound whenever I open a dataset. The name of the sound file it's playing is "Windows Background," and it's located in the C:\Windows\Media folder. I can't figure out why for the life of me, and it's horribly annoying. There are no error messages displayed in the log. How can I disable the sound or make it stop? Any help is appreciated.

I've been using version 9.4 for a while now, and it's never done this before. I ended up reinstalling Windows and SAS for an unrelated reason, and it started doing this.

Did you try to turn off windows sounds?

Thanks for the reply. No, I haven't turned off Windows sounds because I shouldn't have to. I still want the Windows sounds for notifications, errors, etc. I don't know for a fact, but I'm assuming SAS is playing the sound for some reason, like an error. I would get this same sound if I opened a dataset with observations that were too wide for a given variable format. But in that case, the log would also display a note on the format issue. As I said in the OP, the log isn't displaying any notes/warnings/errors.

Look in the general Windows sound settings.

You should be able to set that specific sound from happening or all of them.

Or just turn off the speakers or set system volume to 0.

Yes it's annoying.

Not as annoying as keyboard that apparently doesn't sent the proper scan codes for function keys so I can't use my preferred SAS KEYS settings though.

Thanks for the suggestion. Turning off Windows sounds or turning the volume to zero is a bandaid. I'm trying to determine why SAS is doing this in the first place when it didn't do it before. Besides, turning the volume down would then prohibit me from listening to music as I work. No bueno.

I was hoping it was something simple that someone on the forums may have run into before, but you're probably right about tech support, thanks! I've gone through the SAS preferences and can't find anything related to this.

How are you launching SAS? Entering a command on the command line? Clicking on some icon on the desktop or in the Start menu? Clicking on some file that is associated with SAS?

When does the sound appear? Try turning off the SPLASH option.

Do you have an autoexec.sas file? Look for the system options that control whether the code and notes from running the autoexec file appear in the log.
