These are SAS utility files used internally by SAS software when processing data and are only present for the duration of processing step using them.

.sas7butl files ?

I am watching the temporary SAS files created while a program is running. There are several files with the .sas7butl extension that are created and then quickly disappear.

They have names like

sastmp-031045040.sas7butl

sastmp-031045039.

sastmp-031045038.

etc. then less often

zfmmem.sas7butl

I cannot find any reference to these files on the SAS website or an internet search. Windows is calling the file type SAS Utility.

Any clue as to what these files are and/or what code generates these?

Thanks

They are utility files. That means something that needs to get written temporarily such as when sorting. Many procs may create them but they come and go pretty quickly in many cases.
