How do connect to your SAS metadata server from EG / SMC / DIS? Do you specify a user ID / Password or do you use IWA? If you use IWA, then I suggest you try a user ID and see if that helps. Using IWA causes delegation issues with external database connections unless you have Kerberos (or similar) configured correctly.

Configuring SAS/ACCESS Interface to SAP R/3 to Use SNC

Hello SAS Admin Friends,

Do any of you have experience with configuring the SAS/ACCESS Interface to SAP R/3 to work with SNC (specifically: running SAS on UNIX, but ANY experience at all with this would be helpful)?

Our interface was working fine when we did NOT have SNC enabled in the SAP environment, but now we have moved to SNC and are struggling to get it working for SAS. We've been dealing with this since February and really need to get it working, as a) this has taken way too long and b) SNC just went live in our SAP production environment so now our SAS access to the SAP data is hosed.

Here's where we're at with it:

All other non-SAP environments have been successfully updated to work with SAP SNC, so we know the SAP configuration is correct.

With assistance from SAS Tech Support and a SAS dev, we have recently managed to successfully execute a libname statement and data step against our SNC-enabled SAP/BW QA server, but... only when directly logged onto the server and running the statements from the SAS program editor.

When we try to connect with a libname statement via the SAS desktop apps (EG, MC, DIS), we get errors.

The first error was basically that SAS couldn't locate the sapnwrfc.ini file, which at the suggestion of SAS Tech Support was resolved by placing a copy of the ini file in the startup path used by the desktop applications (which for some unknown annoying reason is not the same as that used by SAS on the server itself). The need for this duplication does not seem to be documented anywhere.

The current error is that now that SAS can locate the copy of the ini file, it still cannot acquire initiating credentials from the cred_v2 file (which we know is a valid and working file, because it works for SAS on the server).

The error is still on the SAS side of the interface, as our SAP environment shows no attempts at connection as it should (and as it does when we run the libname statement directly on the SAS server).

This is the current credentials error (server details snipped):

ERROR: RFC_COMMUNICATION_FAILURE

       LOCATION CPIC (TCP/IP) on local host with Unicode

Deployment registry can help you figure out which components are installed on your SAS machines. If there are any dependent hot-fixes listed for products installed at your site, you should install them too.

Deployment registry has to be executed on all the machines as part of your environment.

Each target machine in your deployment must have a static IP address and hostname. There is constant communication among the CAS controller and the worker nodes, so you have to reduce delays in the communication as much as you can.

Hello,

For deployment of Viya 3.5 in multi-tenancy mode, the tenant onboarding got stuck for 2 or more services in the onboarding state

(a) tenant onboarding was successfully completed with any errors in the onboarding log.

(b) The error I see is "bootstrap error" for services stuck in their individual logs.

(c) A restart of individual services or all sas-viya services didn't help.

So, I proceeded for 2nd tenant onboarding to check if the same issue persists for it. But, 2nd tenant onboarded successfully without any error.

Has anyone came across a similar issue and resolved this would be a great help for their resolution.

Hi everyone,

My name is Mason. I am a new admin for SAS, We just setup a SAS 9.4 on Linux server, we use unixODBC to connect to DB, the version 2.3.1 comes with RHEL7 didn’t work at all, so we downloaded and built unixODBC 2.3.7 on this server and modify LD_LIBARAY_PATH so sasodb will see it Eathan’s than the old 2.3.1, now we are able to connect to the ODBC data source which is a DB2 on AS/400. However when we started to run query, it won’t work at all. It prompted “token invalid”, but the SQL statement we entered was very simple and proved to be running well through query tool.

ERROR: CLI prepare error: [IBM][System i Access ODBC Driver][DB2 for i5/OS]SQL0104 - Token was not valid. Valid tokens: ( CL END GET SET CALL DROP FREE HOLD LOCK OPEN WITH ALTER BEGIN. : [IBM][System i Access ODBC Driver][DB2 for i5/OS]PWS0005 - Error
occurred in the database host server code.
SQL statement: SELECT * FROM TEST.QSRVSRC.

I checked with IBM support and we turned on ODBC trace to see what was fed to ODBC, it is strange that ODBC got a different meaningless string as SQL statement, which is for sure won’t be able to go through. Below is in ODBC trace log

ODBC][18654][1596812654.551234][SQLPrepareW.c][165]
Entry:
Statement = 0x7fea00000e60
SQL = [SLC RMUI00.N_PCNTSQFRRA NY][length = 54]
[ODBC][18654][1596812654.571800][SQLPrepareW.c][346]
Exit:[SQL_ERROR]
DIAG [42000] [IBM][System i Access ODBC Driver][DB2 for i5/OS]SQL0104 - Token was not valid. Valid tokens: ( CL END GET SET CALL DROP FREE HOLD LOCK OPEN WITH ALTER BEGIN.
DIAG [HY000] [IBM][System i Access ODBC Driver][DB2 for i5/OS]PWS0005 - Error occurred in the database host server code.

The SAS on PC(MS Windows) are working with the same DB (also through ODBC) without any problem.

Is there anything that can be configured wrong to cause this kind of issue? Any help is highly appreciated.

SUGA (the SAS User Group for Administrators) has been around since 2016. It was unofficially part of this community, but it now has its own home right on SAS communities.

Go over to SUGA and click 'subscribe' under Options:

SAS Viya CAS Worker nodes migration on AWS

We are planning to migrate our CAS Worker Nodes to larger instance, I have couple of questions

While spinning up new instance for cas worker nodes we will setup same hostname as before, do we also need to maintain same IP address or hostname should be good?

As of now all our servers – microservice, cas controller, worker1 and worker2 are on AWS cloud within same placement group and while migrating the cas worker to another instance family within the same placement group we don’t have the instance family we needed and facing capacity issue. So AWS is recommending to spin up the server outside of placement group.

How would be the impact if we spin up the cas workers away from placement group i.e away from cas controller and microservices ( controller and microservices are staying in same placement group). is that considerable ?

If we Spin up the workers outside of placement there would be some latency in communication when compared to servers within placement group but still we have the server. Not sure if we can go with this approach. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks in advance,
Nikhil.

If you've been around for a while, you know that SUGA (SAS User Group for Administrators) was created as a virtual user group. While we've had in-person meetings the past few years at SAS Global Forum, we've mostly held hour-long webinars for the past 4 years.

2020 is a bit different (to say the least). For the first time, we're having a 1/2 day virtual conference! It's free and open to everyone around the world. You'll get the chance to hear from SAS experts Margaret Crevar, Mark Schneider and Rob Collum. And it will truly be live, so you'll have the chance to ask these folks questions and chat with other attendees (text-based) during a break in the action.

I hope you'll join us on September 23, from noon to 4:00pm ET.

Usually I don't see firewalls between server to server communication. For entry of user requests via SAS clients would be to metadata server default at 8561 and for web applications default at 8343.

In the instructions.html file you will find information only on the port used by particular server/service.

While the link I shared earlier do list the data direction for the default ports which can help you plan better.

AFAIK there is no OOTB script available to fetch this information. You can use the default list available in the install and config guide: https://documentation.sas.com/?docsetId=biig&docsetTarget=n02027intelplatform00install.htm&docsetVersion=9.4&locale=en#n02030intelplatform00install

If the ports at your site were customized during install and config then instructions.html is the best place to find this information.

All recent SAS server builds I've been involved with have included a list of SAS-used ports as part of the design documentation. Was this not done in your case?

It would be worth asking SAS for a default port list for your particular design so you make sure nothing is missed.

Poking around in SAS Management Console for all defined port numbers would be a good starting point.

Mind that the installer account is not used to run SAS software (with the exception of the metadata server and the web application infrastructure).

Workspace servers are run with the logged-in user's account, pooled servers (e.g. stored process servers) with sassrv. These are relevant security-wise.

If your company requires this kind of (totally unnecessary, believe me) separation, you best run two separate servers.

Keep in mind that this would force you to have two installations in parallel, including the web application stack. How you keep those two running without interfering with each other (on Windows, to boot!), I have no idea.

Get some real IT people whose brains have not been burned through by prolonged exposure to crapware (Windows).

The SAS installer account is also used to start basic services, where it is often necessary to be the owner of certain files. Since the account was used during installation, this is guaranteed.

So, basically, one SAS installation -> one SAS installer account.

To separate between a test and prod environment, you do not need separate SAS installations (unless you also physically separate the SAS servers), but you use separate definitions of contexts in a single metadata environment.

Hi,

We are using SAS 9.4M6 with having multiple tier architecture. We recently faced an issue where few of the services on compute nodes were not getting up automatically when we tried to start SAS Grid via sgmg.sh on those nodes. Later, it was figured out that the NTP services on the servers were not turned up after server patching activity was finished (Linux based servers), due to which the time on all the server was not matching. This happened in our Validation environment too. When the NTP services were turned on the VAL servers, we rebooted the SAS services and everything worked into VAL.

However, when we tried the same steps in Production environment (NTP turned on the PROD servers and then SAS services rebooted), though the spawner services were back on compute nodes but, the web services started showing problems as none of the web applications were accessible. Later on it was discovered that the WIP data service was not turning on. Although we did a complete reboot of SAS services, it did not help. We are receiving the below errors every time we go for WIP data services.

Any idea how to get rid of this issue? We have raised a call with SAS Institute on high priority, however, still waiting for their response. So, thought of getting ideas on the SAS community.

2020-08-03 06:35:12.376 UTCLOG: database system was interrupted; last known up at 2020-08-02 20:28:08 UTC

2020-08-03 06:35:20.907 UTCLOG:  record with incorrect prev-link 4F94/740FE085 at 8C/CF9BD098

2020-08-03 06:35:20.907 UTCLOG: invalid primary checkpoint record

2020-08-03 06:35:20.908 UTCLOG: invalid xl_info in secondary checkpoint record

2020-08-03 06:35:20.908 UTCPANIC: could not locate a valid checkpoint record

2020-08-03 06:35:22.489 UTCLOG: startup process (PID 107579) was terminated by signal 6: Aborted

2020-08-03 06:35:22.489 UTCLOG: aborting startup due to startup process failure

2020-08-03 06:35:31.134 UTCLOG: incomplete startup packet

Hi,

I need to access files that are behind a firewall from my compute server(sasapp) which port do I need open to do this. IT dept is asking me which port to open, they won't open all the port, I browsed the documentation but didin't find anything on this.

Anybody have an idea ?

Thank!

Laurent

SAS uses the operating system to access files. It does not care if files are stored locally or on a network share.

The port(s) used to access a network share depends on the protocol being used (SMB, NFS, ...).

So you have to leave this to the system and network administrators, they will be able to determine which protocol is being used, and therefore what ports must be opened on the firewall.

I suggest you log on to the SAS server outside of SAS (via SSH) and determine from the commandline if the network share is accessible at all.

Hi <LI-USER uid="340026"></LI-USER>

SAS EG is a client used to connect SAS installed on remote server machine or local. I assume you are planning to install SAS on a centralized server and let the users connect to it via the client. You will have to go for metadata based product stack in order for users to connect remotely.

If you are comfortable with SAS/Studio Basic is also a good option. Check more about SAS Studio deployments here

Hardware specs would base on how much the usage would be and its always best to take assistance from sizing offered by SAS. You can find the system requirements for installing on Windows platform here

I'm still reluctant to implement something like that. I can't be absolutely sure but I think there are users who will run things, go and do something else, and then come back and expect the contents of their WORK library still to be there. Although I suppose I could just make the change and then sit back and see how many yells of anguish I get!

Thanks for your suggestions anyway

In order to scan a physical folder, you have to know the complete path to it. That is essential.

If your miner projects storage location is on the SAS server, you can use data step functions to retrieve your filenames:

data projectfiles;
length fref $8 pname $200;
did = filename(fref,"path_to_your_project_files");
did = dopen(fref);

then do;
  do i = 1 to dnum(did);
    pname = dread(did,i);
    if scan(pname,-1,'.') = 'emp' then output;
  end;
  did = dclose(did);
end;
did = filename(fref);
run;

Users who are not doing anything with their SAS session would have the session terminated. When they try to execute code, SAS Studio will try to start a new session. In my testing to confirm I logged in to SAS Studio which started two Workspace Server sessions. I terminated these with PROC IOMOPERATE's stop spawned server command and then tried to execute code and got a response. When I checked the spawned servers, two more had been started.

Hi,

When I am trying to validate the workspace sever from SMC, I am getting the below error:

The launch of the server process failed because of a SAS kernel initialization failure.

SEVERE: The launch of the server process failed because of a SAS kernel initialization failure.

I have done a diff between the correctly working SASApp1 and SASApp2, there is no difference in the files underlying in this path

"/opt/sas/config/compute/Lev1/SASApp1/" and "/opt/sas/config/compute/Lev1/SASApp2/"

The differneces are logical where it needs to have the server names are also correct. I have refresh the Object Swapner using Refersh of Application servers as well.

These basic troubleshooting didn't fix the issue.

Please help me to fix this issue.

It doesn't really matter what OS you are on. Either way, you have to mount the NFS disk on the compute server.

I assume you will be accessing those files via NFS? If yes, then read the following NFS security guide: http://tldp.org/HOWTO/NFS-HOWTO/security.html. Your Linux administrator can help you with that.

In SAS Management Console's Server Manager plug-in, under the properties for the Workspace Server's Options tab is an Advanced Options button. It has a Launch Properties tab with an "Inactive client timeout" setting. This will trigger the Object Spawner to terminate a Workspace Server session that has been idle (not running code) for that many minutes.

SAS Studio also has a session timeout setting:

https://go.documentation.sas.com/?docsetId=webeditorag&docsetTarget=n09papwvwhx611n1kfzggdyze5ag.htm&docsetVersion=3.6&locale=en

The only identity values available are SAS.IdentityGroups and SAS.Userid, so your table would need to include one of these values for row-level security. So if the table includes StateCd as your filtering value you would need a group for each StateCd, and grant memberships to those groups accordingly, then use SAS.IdentityGroups as the filter.

SAS 9.4M5 on Windows Server 2012R2, client access via EG 7.15 or SAS Studio 3.71 (mid-tier)

I've recently noticed old SAS processes remaining on our compute server and realised that this coincided with more people using SAS Studio. A bit of experimentation has got me thinking that this is because when users finish their sessions they are simply closing their browser session rather than logging off.

I can distribute a message asking people to remember to log off but chances are this will only be partly effective. Is there a way to ensure that these processes are terminated? I suppose I could run a daily search for SAS processes from earlier than the current day but that has the potential to kill bona fide long-running processes.

How to I create a custom Identity-Based Substitution Variable in SAS Viya

Hello, I am new to SAS as well as SAS Viya. I am in the process of trying to add row-level security for a group of users. (SAS Viya

Scenario:

I have 50 different users within a group, and this group has access to a caslib that consists of 50 tables (within db).

I am trying to take advantage of the substitution variables within SAS, however, I need a variable called state_cd. (each user has access to 1 to many state_cds)

Question: Is it possible to create a metadata table with the needed data and utilize it to create a dynamic Identity Based Substitution filter?

Similar to this:

FacilityRegion In ('SUB::SAS.IdentityGroups')

(but instead of SAS.IdentityGroups, change it to METADATA_TBL.StateCd)

Below is a link to the sas documentation.

https://go.documentation.sas.com/?cdcId=calcdc&cdcVersion=3.4&docsetId=calauthzcas&docsetTarget=n1bf0cwn6ae85gn1b64x2j0czu24.htm&locale=en#p0typu0legb624n139nqaw1p19pt

Thanks MargaretC, I will flag this to business.

But to proceed with ZFS using Quick start is now the challenge I am facing.

If it's not the quick start then how can I proceed.

Hi <LI-USER uid="52993"></LI-USER> ,

Thanks for your revert. User is created properly. No issues in it.

The problem over here was it works fine for 2-3 weeks and the user faces the problem again. We are recreating the user everytime whenever the problem is reported. Moreover it is happening only for couple of users regularly.

If the issue is resolved after recreating the user in SMC, its probably the initial user wasn't created right.
